Benjamin out for two weeks after Timor win
Thailand midfielder Benjamin Davis will be out of action for two weeks after picking up an ankle injury during the War Elephants' 10-0 demolition of Timor Leste in their opening Asean Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024 Group A game in Vietnam on Sunday night.
Uthai Thani star Benjamin, who scored two goals during the game against Timor, twisted his ankle during the first half before he was replaced in the 42nd minute of the match.
Davis had an MRI scan yesterday and according to the national team officials he is expected to miss Thailand's next three group-stage matches as he has been advised to take a two-week rest.
Thailand are scheduled to play their second Group A match of the Asean championship against Malaysia at Bangkok's Rajamangala Stadium on Saturday at 8pm.
The game will be broadcast live on Thai Rath TV (32), AIS Play and BG Sports channel on YouTube.
Besides the Malaysia game, Davis will also miss the War Elephants' trip to Singapore on Dec 17 and their battle with Cambodia at home three days later.
Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar and Laos have been placed in Group B.
The Thai squad continued training for Saturday's game under the supervision of their Japanese head coach Masatada Ishii yesterday.
Before the training session, Thailand's right wing-back Nicholas Mickelson said he was keen to score more goals for the national team after getting his name on the scoresheet against Timor Leste on Sunday night.
"I am very proud and very happy about scoring the goal for the team and I hope that I will score more goals in the next matches during the competition," said Mickelson.
"We will not underestimate any opponents in the group at all. The pitch conditions may be a difficult thing for us, but I believe that we will get through in this tournament.
"I am ready to play in any position that the coach wants me to, but if given a choice, I would like to play as a right wing-back.
"No matter what position I am assigned, I am ready to help the Thai national team as much as possible.
"The game with Malaysia will not be easy work for us at all because they play aggressive football and have much higher potential than Timor Leste. We must stay fully focused on the game against them."
