ONE Championship: Petchtanong denies ‘running away’ after hospital visit, with Nabil fight cancelled
Petchtanong Petchfergus’ kickboxing bout with Nabil Anane has been removed from Saturday’s ONE Fight Night 26 card at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok.
Former bantamweight champion Petchtanong failed to pass hydration or make weight during the official three-hour window on Thursday.
The 39-year-old would have still been able to negotiate a catchweight bout with Nabil had he given a hydrated sample after the official weigh-ins had ended.
However, the veteran Thai fighter later went to hospital, and was not at Friday morning’s ceremonial weigh-ins and face-offs at Cielo Sky Bar.
“I would like to apologize to Nabil, Venum team, and all of the ONE Championship team, as well as my fans and team for disappointing them,” Petchtanong later said in a statement on social morning this morning.
“I accept all criticisms and comments, but I would like to clarify for those who think that I have any intention to escape Nabil – if so, I would not have trained and tried everything until the last second.”
Petchtanong added that he had already agreed to pay part of his purse to Nabil, who was ready to fight at a catchweight, but it was “impossible” in the end because of his health issues.
“I accept the lesson and my own mistakes. I wrongly planned for the hydration because I focused too much on weight,” he said.
“I went to the hospital because I had cramps all over my body and I had diarrhea. Nong-O and my team decided to take me to the hospital.
“We are born to choose the profession of a fighter, no one would think of running away because this is the income that we will get.
“I have never thought of running away from anyone. If there is a fight, I will accept it immediately whether I know in advance or not.”
The 20-year-old Muay Thai phenom Nabil – who was set to compete in his first kickboxing bout in ONE – did not travel to the ceremonial weigh-ins on Friday.
Instead, he visited Petchtanong’s house to bring him some gifts and share lunch, alongside Venum Training Camp teammate PTT Petchrungruang.
“I’m rooting for you, brother,” Nabil said in a social media post. “Keep fighting. I’m coming to visit you with a small souvenir.”
Petchtanong was one of three fighters to miss weight on Thursday, with Denis Puric and Elias Mahmoudi both coming in heavy for their flyweight Muay Thai fight.
They agreed to a catchweight, however, with the fight stayong on Saturday’s card.
