Thongpoon PK Saenchai has called for a rematch with Zakaria El Jamari after getting back in the ONE Championship win column on Saturday in Bangkok.
The local fan favourite bulldozed his way to a second-round TKO of former title challenger Danial Williams in their strawweight Muay Thai bout at ONE Fight Night 26.
It put an end to a two-fight skid – and now Thongpoon wants to get some revenge against the man who handed him the first of those losses.
“If you talk about who I want to fight, I want to have a rematch with Zakaria,” he told the Bangkok Post backstage at Lumpinee Stadium.
The 27-year-old looked back to his usual self against “Mini T”, moving forward relentlessly and throwing down in a wild opening bout on the card.
“I felt happy – it’s almost like I unlocked something in myself, I was under a lot of pressure after the past two fights,” Thongpoon said.
“I felt very happy for myself, and happy too that I was able to make my boss smile again.”
Thongpoon told the Bangkok Post before the fight that he had grown his hair out as a good luck charm – on the advice of his barber.
The superstition seemed to do the trick, but he admitted he may not keep his new look for long.
“I haven’t made up my mind that I’m going to keep my hair all of the time, – sometimes I will go bald, it depends on my mood,” he added.
Williams was the perfect dance partner for Thongpoon, ready and willing – perhaps unwisely – to engage in a firefight.
“I must say to Danial Williams that I have a lot of respect for you,” the Thai added.
“He has fought with many of the top guys like Rodtang, Jonathan Di Bella and Superlek. To be fighting him is such an honor for me.”
